Conservation and biodiversity on Ilhéu da Praia

RB da Ilha Graciosa 17 de Janeiro, 2025

The 26th newsletter of the World Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves highlights the Graciosa Island Biosphere Reserve

The Graciosa Island Biosphere Reserve stands out for its work on Ilhéu da Praia, a critical habitat for seabirds and endemic species. As part of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, conservation efforts include the removal of invasive species, the propagation of native vegetation, and the installation of artificial nests for seabirds.

Covering approximately 10 hectares, Ilhéu da Praia is part of the Natura 2000 Network and plays a vital role in maintaining the region’s ecological balance. This dedication reflects Graciosa’s commitment to promoting sustainability and protecting the unique biodiversity of the archipelago.
